For hundreds of years, Lake Atitlán’s waters have risen and
fallen in predictable cycles. However, after 2010’s tropical storm Agatha,
lakewater rose a staggering 15 feet in just a year and a half. Lakefront hotels
and restaurants flooded, premium property was destroyed, and thousands of residents
have suffered the consequences. At this time, water levels seem to have
stabilized. But some believe that landsides caused by Agatha have blocked
underwater channels, and the situation could continue to get worse. So visit
the lake while you still can!!
